(Blastocyst, Continued) Moreover, at the Reproductive Care Center we have established that embryos transferred on Day 5 lead to a greater than 70% chance of initiating pregnancy. Our success rate for Day 3 embryo transfer is 50%-60%. Similarly, other clinics are reporting higher clinical success rates with Day 5 embryo transfer compared to Day 3 transfers (58% vs 32%, respectively; Grifo et al. Fertility and Sterility 2010). Another consideration is that by allowing embryos to develop to the blastocyst stage, we can reduce the incidence of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets and quads) by electing to transfer a single blastocyst stage embryo. Finally, with the advent of new technologies (PGD, proteomics and metabolomics), it is imperative that embryos are cultured to the blastocyst stage to take advantage of these selection tools. Here at the RCC, we are confident that our embryo culture system will support development to the blastocyst stage and warrant Day 5 embryo transfer in most cases. The Disadvantage of Waiting to Transfer Embryos on Day 5
There is a rare possibility that none of your embryos will progress beyond the 8-cell stage by Day 5. Most of our Day 5 embryo transfers have been performed with embryos that have reached the blastocyst stage, although some transfers have taken place with embryos that were not quite blastocysts but rather were in the intermediate stage of development called the morula stage. Pregnancy rates on Day 5 with embryos that have not reached the blastocyst stage are lower, but there have been too few of these cases to make a meaningful comparison. Additionally, there may be no embryos to transfer on Day 5 because of overall poor embryonic development. In this case, you would not have a transfer and your chance of pregnancy would therefore be zero. |
(Continued, When the News is Bad.) Complementary therapies and creative outlets provide a welcome source of comfort for many. Massage, creative visualization, acupuncture, journaling or blogging about your experiences are some of the activities patients have found helpful. Utilize resources. There are a variety of resources available for fertility patients at every stage of their treatment process. The following Web sites provide access to information and support materials:
Give yourself as much time as you need to grieve the loss of your dream, then when you are ready to move on make a plan. Moving on may be easier if you feel you have a path to follow. Regardless of whether or not you plan to continue treatment, a follow up appointment with your physician will allow you to plan for further treatment or can help you achieve the closure needed to move on in a healthy way. Appointments are available to follow up at any point in your treatment, and a follow up appointment within 3 months of the IVF cycle is included (in all the prepaid cycle plans) for all unsuccessful IVF cycles at Reproductive Care Center. The journey through infertility treatment can be a difficult one but it doesn’t have to be one you take alone. Remember to lean on your sources of support whether it’s your family and friends, a caring professional, or one of the staff at Reproductive Care Center.

Although this can be devastating news to hear, there may be some comfort in knowing: (1) you would not have established a pregnancy even if we had transferred embryos on Day 3, and (2) you would have avoided 2 weeks of unnecessary progesterone injections.
